Why ‘finding mix voice’ doesn’t work for pop singers and what does.

When singers and teachers talk about finding mix voice, they mean finding a mix between chest voice and head voice.

This is because chest voice has much density to its sound, but has an inbuilt range limit.

While head voice has little density to its sound, but can be used on high notes.

It makes sense that singers believe that once you the mix between these two, more intense sounding high notes are guaranteed.

But many singers struggle to actually find that sweet spot.

Not only that.

Once they do find that sweet spot, they oftentimes struggle to sound like what pop singers in today’s music industry sound like…

Instead, they find their singing voice sounding weak instead of impactful.

Somehow, they can’t achieve enough density in their sound when singing high notes.

And to make matters worse, they now have to switch from chest voice to mix voice, while both have different technical rules!

This makes singing messy and difficult..

It doesn’t help that teachers oftentimes don’t agree on what chest voice and head voice are even supposed to sound like!

It also doesn’t help that most singers and teachers believe that the sound of a singer’s voice, is set in stone.

Sentencing aspiring pop singers to accepting a sound that they don’t like, much less want to put on an album.

Oftentimes they end up sounding like a musical or opera, instead of what people in 2021 listen to on Spotify.

This is exactly how singers give up on their dream of being a pop singer in today’s music industry.

It’s simply too hard to measure up.

Let’s talk about what DOES work.

What I teach singers to do is to forget about chest voice, head voice, mix voice and belt voice.

Instead, they learn to sing with only 2 sounds.

Sound One is a sound that has a lot of density to it (also when singing high notes).

Sound Two is that whispery sound that’s trending right now.

The cool thing about these sounds is that:

  • They both don’t have range-limits. (Hello, impactful high notes)
  • They have similar technical rules. That’s why it’s easy to mix them together to create multiple intensities and to switch to one extreme and back again, without having to use a different technique.

After activating these sounds, singers discover that singing itself becomes WAY easier…

And once they sing with that kind of freedom, it becomes easy to be creative with their singing AND with their sound!

Usually this is the point they start creating their own special flavour. Or what I like to call: sound signature.
